church planters: take note

music: october mixtape

This month's mixtape is made in honor of my daughter, who is celebrating her birthday this month. I make a mixtape for most birthdays and holidays for our family. This one is themed in part by Halloween/Dia De Los Muertos and in part by the theme to Paige's party tomorrow: Alice in Wonderland. She dressed up as the Mad Hatter today for school, will do so for her party tomorrow and Sunday while trick-or-treating. There's lots of cross over. Danny Elfman is the king of creepy, yet fun musical endeavors. His fingerprint is all over this. But so is another artist described similarly but is certainly more of an "acquired taste:" Tom Waits. Much of this reflects some of Paige's favorite movies and music: Alice in Wonderland (both the animated and recent Depp/Elfman film), The Wizard of Oz and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Some were selected for these themes or general creepy composition regardless of lyrical content. The only exception is "Birthday" which is on every birthday mixtape 'round here. Oh, and I dare you to look up the last track. The EP that this track comes off of has got to be one of the more psychotic, creepy recordings I've yet to listen to. Lastly, I like doing things in three's (3 kids? You'll pick up on this if you ever take a class I teach too... and the Trinity?). So, since Paige is turning 9, there's 27 songs. Enjoy!

my mad hatter

kids say the darnedest things...

Talking to my kids tonight...

Paige: "When's Jesus coming back? He's been on a long vacation."

Me: "Well, he's not on vacation. Let me read the beginning of Acts for you.."

As I read Acts 1:5, speaking about baptism...

Paige: "I want to be baptized when I turn 10 and in Tennessee." (she has this thing with the Civil Rights movement and significant locations)

As I am soaking in this momentous occasion...

Matt: (quite matter-of-fact, not even looking up from the page he's coloring) "I don't think they do baptisms in Tennessee, Paige."

food for thought

"Since our churches have taken on many of the characteristics of bureaucracies, it is not surprising that clergy are sometimes rewarded, not punished for their narcissistic behaviors."

my daughter is cooler than eugene cho

Yes, I'm shamelessly promoting both my daughter and Eugene Cho.

To tell the truth, I've never met Cho. But I'm inspired by his work. This is what makes my daughter a better person than I. She doesn't need to be inspired by someone such as he. In fact, she has no idea who he is. But she decided that this year she would do something quite similar to what Cho promotes through One Days Wages.

Paige turns 9 this month. She told her mom and I that she didn't need anything for her birthday. Instead of getting presents, she wanted to invite her friends to an "unbirthday party" (themed after Alice in Wonderland) and ask them to bring donations for nine year old girls living at San Diego Rescue Mission. She's nine. And she's already getting her friends in on one of the things her heart breaks most over: homelessness.

I, like so many others, need to see things like what Cho does so that I can say, "I can do that too!" But Paige didn't. She just knew it was the right thing to do. So, maybe she's not cooler than him. But I'm super proud of her and she's certainly cooler than me.

music: october guest mixtape - Be Rad

Earlier this year, I was in Colorado Springs with my cohort from Fuller. I shared with the group how punk rock has a huge impact on my faith. I have always seen parallels between punk rock ideology and Christianity. And it has always provided significant challenges as well. I shared in the Springs that a tenant of punk rock is, question everything. Now, that can sound like doubt, or lack of faith, but for me it meant, be inquisitive, go deeper. When I did this in regards to my faith, I became a more convinced Christian not less.

Over the years, I've made many friends that share similar faith convictions and interest in punk/hardcore music. Be Rad is one of them. I asked him to contribute this month's guest mixtape. Here, he digs into the vault for some hard to find, yet fantastic punk and hardcore tracks.

Guest mixtape October '10: Punk's Not Dead, It's Just in the Basement Bashing its Face into the Wall

Be Rad writes:The underground of punk and hardcore continues to go as against the grain as possible, churning up and spitting out noise that will blow out your ears and your speakers. By its very nature, this isn't for everybody. But throw this mixtape on, and you'll see that things didn't die after Minor Threat and Black Flag, and that the rebel youth spirit in music still rages on. Enjoy!

  2. Cult Ritual - Failed  (from self-titled LP)

Dick and Jane and Vampires

Priceless!

I guess the success of mash-up's such as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and the like has encouraged someone to take this into the children's book genre.

Dick and Jane were long overdue for a new spin on the classic anyways.

asset-based community development

Looking forward to an event we're bringing to First Pres' this month. We're partnering with my friend Brad Fieldhouse and the folks at Kingdom Causes to do an asset-based community development workshop. Should be good stuff for helping all of us in San Diego reach out to our perspective neighborhoods in authentic, empowering ways.

If you'd like to joins us, go here to sign up.
