missing my little girl

My daughter sent this to me today. Makes me miss her even more. She's an amazing little person and budding artist.

c.t. studd: jesus radical

One of my fellow seminarians, Carlos, has been educating me about the Jesus radical, C.T. Studd (1860-1931)–Thanks, C-los. While I haven't read up much on this guy yet, it seems he was from a wealthy English family, became a Jesus follower and eventually was compelled to lead a ministry to Africa. I'm always wary of the colonizing mishaps from this era of Christian missionary work. Still, I am digging this guy's attitude. He started a missionary order referred to D.C.D., which stands for, "Don't Care a Damn." Sorry if that language offended you. Language aside, I love discovering Christians who go "against the grain" and follow what God has called them to do no matter what fools they appear to be before others. You can find some material on/by Studd here. Currently, he joins Willems, Bonhoeffer, Allen, Romero and King as one of the historical Christians who make me say, "Now that is punk rock!"

What do you know about Studd that I should know?

What Christians throughout Church history do you look up to?

garden of the gods

Some of us took our day off as a chance to go check out the Garden of the Gods here in the springs. Now, back to the books!

week 1 in the springs

For those who didn't know, I'm currently in Colorado Springs. I'm here for my seminary program with Fuller. Week one seminar is complete and on Monday the second begins. I'll be back to San Diego on May 1. The material is great. The fellow students are amazing. The landscape is beautiful (though I miss the city). I am missing my family pretty bad, though. Anyways, here's some pics of week one in the springs.

movies + theological conversations

I need your recommendations. What movies, in your experience, have cultivated the best theological conversations?

Give me your top three! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Family friendly, but not cheesy, earns extra points.

my son and papa jo jones

For Matty's birthday, he received my snare drum and throne. I've played this same snare drum since before Brooke and I were married and with 7 different bands. It felt good to pass this on to him. We've been working on a few basic beats, posture and accuracy. I will hear him banging away in his room without even being asked to play. Kid's got rhythm! But I can't take all of the credit for his interest. Tim, from As I Lay Dying is a friend of ours and Matt is well aware of their music videos. As fierce as Tim seems, he's an incredibly gentle and kind person. Matt thinks he's pretty cool. When Matt saw their videos, which often cross heavy metal awesomeness with science fiction story lines, he was sold. Plus the windmill's that Jordan pulls were pretty impressive to Matt.

Anyways, so we were working on accuracy last night, trying to hit one, small circle on his snare. He didn't understand the reason why, so I pulled up some drumming videos to show the accuracy of great drummers. To my surprise, Matty was completely taken by jazz drummers. As we were getting him ready for bed, he told me, "I wanna be able to play like Papa Jo Jones someday. He's even cooler than Tim's drummer."

a) How cool is it that my 6 year old knows and is growing in appreciation for a jazz legend like Papa Jo!

b) Sorry, Tim. I still think y'all rock.
